William's Story

Inpatient, Aitkin, MN

I was a patient in St. Joseph's Medical Center in July, 2009.  I was in for obstructing kidney stones under the care of Dr. Qualey, who put in temporary stents.  I live in Aitkin.

They might recall me because I praised the hospital's use of computers/technology, but urged more: do one history.

My care was absolutely great.  As I told the nurses several times, I felt like I was in the 'Four Seasons Hotel.' However, what mattered the most was that the staff was competent, professional and considerate.  They were also patient and pleasant to be with.  Nothing artificial, just good people.

It was clear to me that the people knew what they were doing, and cared about how they were doing it.

I also have to mention the food.  It was clear to me that whoever planned and prepared the meals cared about what they were doing as well.

Whether there's a budget of $5 or $50 for a given meal, it's easy to notice the small things that signal someone cared about what they were doing.  Maybe the budget doesn't allow for caviar, but what was served was fresh, tasty, and enjoyable.
